A tumblr/blog for the development of my future RPG Maker games. Images be placeholders~

Sometimes I also reblog stuff that inspires me personally. Hurray!

#1ReasonWhy: The Aftermath

I’ve done a lot of soul-searching the past week or so. When I had time to, anyways- busy week.

This will be a short post, since… yeah.

I really am glad #1ReasonWhy happened! It is easy to feel so isolated in my interests, and to get pushed out of communities for having unique game ideas, or this perceived “threat” that women and other minority groups will “Gay up and womenify our gamez oh noes!” It’s simply another option. I believe the creator of the hashtag put it best- and I’m paraphrasing here: We want you to have your GTA Shoot-em-ups and whatnot, but we’d like to have our kinds of fantasy sim farmland 4 games, too. That’s something I can get behind.

Despite the expected negativity and ostrich-tactics(I can’t see it! It doesn’t exist! Silly women, you’re being sexist/racist/homophobic since you’re specifically including a minority group in your game oh no!, etc), there is a lot of good that has come from this. The discussion is actually being developed upon. There’s a surge of creativity coming through. Women are being heard, and various resources and mentors have come through. That last part is something I’m exceptionally grateful for.

@Filamena has truly helped this get organized as well. There’s a site now!

This is so incredibly invaluable for me. I may not be ready to go for an industry job right now(super not right now- do you know of any companies hiring in Kentucky? Thought not, haha); however, I may do so in the future. In the time I am polishing my skill sets, there’s an incredible group doing things from the goodness of their own hearts and for a greater purpose.

It’s just very inspiring. Have I said inspiring yet? I tend to use that word a lot when my heart is so full and warm.:)

effingarcade:

There’s a frightening hashtag on Twitter right now. Click here to read through it.

I’ve seen women deciding to change career path because of the obstructions set before them by male colleagues.

I’ve seen women discouraged from chasing their dreams.

It’s terrifying. We already know that the games industry is sexist and unfriendly towards women from its ugly top to its seedy bottom. It’s one of the reasons why we hate it. But through that #1reasonwhy hashtag we can put faces to the women directly affected by the casual sexism that we’ve allowed to prosper.

And as horrible as it is that ANY women have been pushed off-course by these attitudes, it frightens me that we’ve probably lost some great storytellers. We’ve probably lost some giants. And importantly, some giants who will offer fresh perspectives.

Look at Joni Mitchell.

She is the greatest singer/songwriter of all time. Of all the storytellers to stand in a spotlight with a guitar, she is the best - her lyrics telling stories that hang in the air like campfire tales. And yet despite proving her worth time and time again, she is still described as a “great female singer-songwriter”. She’s been called “The Female Bob Dylan”, when Dylan couldn’t lace her boots. It’s that old casual sexism thing where a woman can’t just be the best - she has to be a female version of something. As if she’s nothing more than a successful tribute act.

And yet, her albums exist. We can swoon at the elegance of Hejira whenever we want, and marvel at the honesty and wit of Court and Spark whenever we feel low. (I remember, as a young man, hearing her People’s Parties and thinking “That’s me. She knows me. She’s like me.” I remember it helping me cope.)

We can hear Joni and tune out the noise of the male-dominated music press who spent decades painting her as the chick with the guitar. We can hold her up as a human being who fought adversity and left behind a legacy filled with truth.

But the great women that the games industry has lost, and will continue to lose, will never have the chance to fight sexist perception and enlighten us with their brilliance. They will never get the chance to be a great creator dismissed by the male-controlled media for having a vagina. Until things change, they won’t even fucking have that. That’s how bad things are.

And you know… we need women up there doing that stuff. Because equality is essential, yes. But being a woman matters.

Joni once said, about her musical contribution to the film “Grace Of My Heart”: There was a great line in that movie: “You’re a woman-you will be able to write things that men can’t.” They took it out, but I thought it was great. I said. ‘Nobody ever said that to me.”

Nobody ever said that to Joni. Nobody said that- even to the greatest living singer-songwriter.

Right there is another reason why.

Yeah, some of the staff at the official RPGM site would never believe this. It’s a shame.

These women are brave to share their stories, and I’ve shared a few of my own despite not being professional.

We do matter, and we’re not going anywhere.

A quick scavenger game, Operation: Trick-or-Treat follows the adventure of Paula and her two children as they attempt to search for money around the house to order a pizza in a financial pickle. If the kids can’t find enough cash, Paula isn’t going to let them simply Trick-or-Treat and have candy for dinner alone. Will the kids be able to receive treats this year? Or is this Halloween night full of tricks?

The game did get done in time for the contest! I hope I come in 2nd(there’s a really fun game that I definitely feel should be 1st place).

There’s usually a quick review involved with the game, and I already got some feedback regarding how it being a little more open-ended would’ve been more fun. I definitely agreed with that, but because of the time constraint(I basically wrote/made a few assets for/concept art/actual in-program stuff for about a couple hours a day for 7 days until the last couple days where I had to go all out to make the deadline).

I really did have that as my original concept if there were no time restriction. Definitely! I’m thinking of maybe trying to do something else with these characters, since they’ve kinda grown on me.

So yeah! After like, 11 years in the RPG Maker community(I started out on the PSone, didn’t do PC until XP… so okay I also dabbled with RPGM2000 a bit, who didn’t?), being a previewer for a console RPGM site(I reviewed demos and interviewed creators), and generally still schlepping around those communities- I actually did something. I like to imagine I was saving it for an actual good idea. It’s a short game, but I tried to keep the scope down so A: I’d finish the game in time, and B: So I’d finish making the game.

Enjoy!

Status Report!

Journal!

…No seriously, status is still in my journal that I write in whenever something strikes me. I do know I need to condense and chop some stuff and start to make a cohesive project soon, but brainstorming is definitely my favorite part of these kinds of processes.

And, to boot- I’ve been working on some stuff for some other people and a site I’ve been a part of for a while. Including editing a podcast each week. Which isn’t to say it’s bad or anything, but it takes some time.

And huge gaming backlog. And hopefully finding holiday work. And fall game release windows, and Wii U being out next month, just so much stuff when you don’t have someone to cook for you, etc haha.

But the project is still at least getting updated more journal wise. I’ve also been messing around in FL Studio on the computer with my cheap keyboard and the iPad version(which ain’t bad at all). So there’s that.

But I guess that’s all there is to say really, at least for right now. Hope everyone is doing well.

Random Candle #1

So, the internet went down last night for a while, hopefully just maintenance, but there will more than likely be more storms and whatnot at this time of year, so I imagine that it’ll go down more and more if storms keep hitting. It’s frustrating, but nothing I can’t live with. …Okay, so made a bit more alright by the fact that I finally got a smart phone earlier this year. They’re addicting!

Anywho, I just got bored last night and did this for fun. I really want stuff in my game to have personality. I don’t want to have perfectly symmetrical objects that aren’t really like that in nature… and also perhaps, a bit of an exaggeration/illustrated feel moreso. That’s part of the beauty! And there’s plenty of symmetrical stuff to man-made structures, which are also quite excellent.
